KUALA LUMPUR: All educational institutions, from schools to universities, have been instructed to place a stronger emphasis on Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Dewan Rakyat was told today.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said mastering AI will be crucial in determining Malaysia's ability to increase productivity.
"I have instructed all educational institutions to focus on AI, as it is essential for improving productivity. The mastery of AI will determine whether Malaysia can boost its productivity and enhance its competitiveness in the global market," he said in response to a supplementary question from Muar member of parliament Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman during the Prime Minister's Question Time in Dewan Rakyat today.
Syed Saddiq inquired about the government's plan to boost worker productivity.
Anwar added while the government has developed clear policies on AI, the widespread mastery of AI remains a significant hurdle.
The prime minister also emphasised the connection between productivity growth and wage increases.
He said studies in countries like Japan and South Korea show that higher productivity is often accompanied by higher wages.
However, he highlighted that in Malaysia, despite an increase in productivity, wages have not kept pace.
"There are cases in Malaysia where productivity has increased, but wages have not risen accordingly. We are actively monitoring this issue and working to address it."
To tackle this, the measures taken include upskilling through TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) programmes.
"Second, the introduction of new disciplines such as AI, digital energy and other emerging technologies at universities, training centres and centres of excellence."
Anwar said many new global companies investing in Malaysia are now required to establish centres of excellence, these include Google, Microsoft and Infineon, which offer training and upskilling opportunities, especially in AI."
