Parents must be tech-savvy to prepare for kids' education

KUALA LUMPUR: Parents need to brush up on tech-savviness so that they can be involved in their children's education, says Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) chief executive officer Surina Shukri (pic).
She said demand for talent versed in digital skills was only getting higher, making an education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects essential.
Parents, in turn, need to learn about the digital economy, so they can help their children's studies and also in choosing what schools or courses to pick up.
"To parents: we have a job to prepare the kids for the future. But we have to be prepared as well, so we need to take this opportunity," she said.
Speaking at the launch of the My Digital Maker Fair on Saturday (Sept 14), Surina said it was a positive sign that some 20,000 parents and teachers were expected to attend the event over the weekend.
She added that the fair, now in its third year, had sparked an interest in STEM among 700,000 students and trained 80,000 teachers.
During the fair, Mdec will be running its techstudy.my platform, an artificial intelligence profiling tool that helps students identify courses and scholarships in digital-related courses.
Tertiary consultants will also be on hand to help students based on their reports generated by the tool.
