Bad news - 50% of SMEs not digitally ready

08 December 2020 Bad news - 50% of SMEs not digitally ready
According to Siemens Malaysia's findings, 50 percent of SMEs in Malaysia are NOT prepared to adopt the new normal of working from home due to the Covid-19 pandemic as they are lagging in infrastructure and systems for their staff.

Many small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) are struggling with their digital transformation according to Siemens Malaysia Sdn Bhd president and chief executive officer Adam Yee.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, many businesses have been forced to adopt digitalisation to ensure business continuity, survival and ease the overall impact.

There's an internet meme that poses the question: Who lead the digital transformation of your company? A) CEO B) CTO C) COVID-19. Ironically, the answer lies with the pandemic that has forced most SMEs to adopt a digital strategy, whether they are ready or not.

According to Yee, the three main factors hindering SMEs move to the digital realm is due to; the misconception of high cost, lack of understanding as well as the shortage of digital talents in the workforce.

Due to this, Siemens together with the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) has been conducting the Digital Transformation Acceleration Programme. The company has been appointed as digital transformation labs partner to assist Malaysian companies with their digital transformation plans.

Under the programme, Siemens help companies identify their business plans using specific methodologies to brainstorm on new ideas, design new business models, develop new products and technology designs, and pilot the implementation plan.

Initial assessments from Siemens found that many SMEs were unwilling to invest for their digitisation purposes and many were lacking in digital readiness.

Under the Siemens programme, emphasis is placed on educating and advising SMEs on the advantages and gains they could achieve through digital transformation.

At the end of the day, SMEs have to start thinking on what the digital transformation journey entails or what are their avenues to remain competitive or relevant in the market.
